Job Description:

Walter L. Cohen College Prep High School is searching for a Special Education Coordinator for the 2019-2020 school year. Our special education program adheres to the philosophy that all scholars are entitled to the individualized supports necessary to maximize his/her potential. We empower teachers and scholars to achieve excellence in all aspects of our scholar’s social/emotional/behavioral and academic lives. We work diligently to provide quality education that prepares all scholars to enter and excel in rigorous, post-secondary outcomes. If you are relentless about seeing all students achieve at high levels, this is a chance to work at a school that does whatever it takes to ensure success for all students.

Walter L. Cohen High School opened its doors in the Fall of 1949 and became the 5th public secondary school available to students of color in New Orleans. In 2012, Cohen became a member of the New Orleans College Prep (NOCP) charter management organization.

Our mission is to prepare students with academic and life skills for success in college, career, and beyond.

Prior to Hurricane Katrina, only 1 in 10 public high school students graduated from college. We are on a mission to turn those statistics around and ensure all of our students have an opportunity to succeed in college and beyond.

NOCP is producing significant student achievement gains for our students, 75% of whom are African-American and ~20% of whom are English Language Learners. Recent highlights of our achievements include:

  • In 2015, Walter L. Cohen College Prep launched The Academy of Career and Community Education (ACCE) . ACCE is a comprehensive program designed to prepare students with significant exceptionalities (ages 14 - 22) to achieve their most rigorous post-graduation goals.

  • Cohen is the home of the 2018-2019 D.A.L.E. Fellowship for innovation in English Learner education. The fellowship includes a financial award, instructional resources, and ongoing training to support differentiation for English Learners. In addition to improving their own classroom practice, our ELL teachers train other content teachers and strengthen our capacity to deliver high quality instruction to all students.

  • Since 2014, Cohen College Prep High School’s graduating classes achieved a 100% college acceptance rate.
