Job Description:

Walter L. Cohen High School is searching for an /Behavior Interventionist for the 2022 - 2023 school year. This individual will ensure a safe and productive environment for students while they are temporarily removed from the classroom. Additionally, he/she will support teachers in building classroom and school culture to ensure our students have both the academic skills and character traits to success in college and in life. Background:

Walter L. Cohen High School opened its doors in the Fall of 1949 and became the 5th public secondary school available to students of color in New Orleans. In 2012, Cohen became a member of the New Orleans College Prep (NOCP) charter management organization.

Our mission is to prepare students with academic and life skills for success in college, career, and beyond.

Prior to Hurricane Katrina, only 1 in 10 public high school students graduated from college. We are on a mission to turn those statistics around and ensure all of our students have an opportunity to succeed in college and beyond.

NOCP is producing significant student achievement gains for our students, 75% of whom are African-American and ~20% of whom are English Language Learners. Recent highlights of our achievements include:

In 2015, Walter L. Cohen College Prep launched The Academy of Career and Community Education (ACCE) . ACCE is a comprehensive program designed to prepare students with significant exceptionalities (ages 14 - 22) to achieve their most rigorous post-graduation goals.

Cohen is the home of the 2018-2019 D.A.L.E. Fellowship for innovation in English Learner education. The fellowship includes a financial award, instructional resources, and ongoing training to support differentiation for English Learners. In addition to improving their own classroom practice, our ELL teachers train other content teachers and strengthen our capacity to deliver high quality instruction to all students.

Job Responsibilities

Builds positive and influential relationships with students, families and faculty;

De-escalates explosive situations; Manages own stress and frustration;

Able to address and lead large groups of students;

Consistently works to close the home-school gap through home visits, calls and community outreach programs

Design, use and coach teachers on send out processes;

Report all send outs, calls and home visits by recording the information in the student data tracking system;

Report all ISS/OSS/detention information daily to team through the student data tracking system and grade team meetings;

Ensure all work for ISS room organized and consistently administered

ISS procedures, conduct tracker and materials are easy to access and hand off to anyone covering the room and the room is neatly maintained.

Students are on task and productive while in ISS with classroom specific work.

Maximize and manager the ISS room in a manner that will reduce out of school suspensions

Assist Behavior Team in supervising students to ensure a safe, non-threatening, nurturing environment where students can thrive

Assist Behavior Team in working to close the home-school gap through home visits, calls, and community outreach programs

Communicates to staff all pertinent information, including but not limited to: detention lists, re-entry meetings after suspensions, send out, ISS, and OSS lists, etc.

Upholds school uniform and handbook code, and notifies team daily of student who have a uniform violation.

Design, use, and coach around disciplinary send out procedures and positive behavior interventions.

Assist Behavior Team in reviewing behavior referrals and data reports. Provides teachers feedback around behavioral patterns & suggested support

Participate in building level and/or grade level behavioral meetings

Other tasks as directed by the Principal, Assistant Principal, and/or Behavior Team

Qualifications:

Effective, timely and clear written communication skills
Tenacious follow-up skills, follows through on commitments
Ability to follow directions and work unsupervised on multiple projects and meet deadlines
Proficient in Gmail, Google Drive (scheduling, calendar, contact functions), Word, Excel and Google Slides
Attention to detail: does not let important details slip through the cracks; meticulous
Experience: 2+ years working with children in low income communities.
Constant learner: Solicits feedback and implements new ideas in instruction, stays abreast of current research on teaching and learning, enhances professional skills
Solutions-Oriented: concentrates on finding ways to solve problems and improve systems
